The size and layout of this lot created an opportunity to rethink what an accessory dwelling unit could be. Rather than a typical compact ADU, the owners wanted a flexible, multi-functional structure that could evolve with their family over time. A primary goal was to create a comfortable, stair-free living space for aging parents—one that would remain accessible and functional well into the future.
Equally important was designing a garage that reflected an active Colorado lifestyle. The family needed ample room for bikes, skis, camping gear, and vehicles equipped with racks and rooftop tents. To accommodate this, the garage was designed with tall ceilings, oversized doors, and generous clearances—allowing for efficient storage, easy access, and room for future recreational vehicles.
A bonus space was incorporated to provide additional flexibility, with the ability to function as an office, gym, workshop, or play space as needs change. The project is being constructed in a phased approach to maintain budget control, allowing portions of the building to be finished later as priorities evolve. The result is a design that challenges the conventional ADU model—prioritizing adaptability, longevity, and thoughtful use of space.
